I am a long-time DIY-er. From refinishing furniture to sewing up curtains, to creating halloween costumes, it’s safe to say that I spend a healthy amount of time on Pinterest. That being said when it came to DIY-ing my own clothes I often felt unrepresented by what I was seeing out in the blogosphere. Similar to the fashion industry, most women making their own garments and littering my Pinterest feed, although beautiful, are also slender.
So why does this matter? Well for one, there’s the practical elements. From garment construction, to fabrics, to pattern selection, generally these choices are in alignment with making clothes for smaller bodies. And then there’s the emotional side. When we don’t see ourselves represented it’s difficult to feel motivated and to picture yourself wearing the DIY creations you’re finding online.
I created this site and this mission, of creating beautiful tailored and custom clothing for my body, as it is today, in an effort to create a more inclusive DIY sewing and styling movement and to make sure that all bodies, regardless of size, have the resources, know-how and confidence to sew up their own, imaginative, DIY creations.
DIY Style is for every body!
